To be an excellent roleplayer, it's important to be knowledgeable about wolves. While TRP offers you this general genesis, we encourage you to further expand your knowledge.
On average, adults have a nose-to-tail length between 4.5 and 6ft (1.4 to 1.8m), a height at the shoulder from 26 to 32 inches (66 to 81cm), and a weight measuring between 50 and 110lbs (22.7 to 50kg). The largest wolf on record weighed 175lbs (79.3kg). Males are larger than females, and northern wolves are generally larger than those in southern areas.
-EXTRA SMALL — 20 to 22in, 40 to 70lbs. (rare)
-SMALL — 24 to 25in, 71 to 84lbs. (common)
-MEDIUM — 26 to 29in, 85 to 104lbs. (common)
-LARGE — 30 to 34in, 105 to 120lbs. (uncommon)
-EXTRA LARGE — 35 to 40in, 120 to 140lbs. (rare)
Heat begins in late winter, so that pups can be born in Spring. Pregnant females have a gestation period of about 63 days, and produce litters roughly ranging of 1-7 pups.
During the Breeding Season, the Alphas become extremely close to each other. The Alpha Male protects his mate by attacking any male who comes close. When the Alpha Female is in heat, all males within the pack are effected by it. Challenges over her happen frequently.
10-13 days: eyes open
3 weeks: ability to hear. milk teeth appear. start exploring the den
4 weeks: leave the den. begin to eat meat. start to howl
5 weeks: start to travel up to a mile from the den
5-8 weeks: weaning and moved to the pack Den.
12 weeks: start to follow along on hunts
4-7 months: loose milk teeth
7-8 months: start to hunt
Expecting mothers build their own private den to give birth in. If another wolf comes too close they will growl and snarl in warning.
The mortality rate for Wolf puppies is very high in the wild. An average of 60% of pups die before reaching a year of age, with the mortality range being 6-80%. Wolves mourn dead puppies.
Territory fights with other wolves and scuffles with large prey can lead to injuries and death, and wolves are subject to diseases like Lyme disease, and those endemic to canids, like canine mange, parvovirus, and distemper.
Due to no threat from humans, wolves in TRP live until they're 8-12.
